CONCERT FOR A CAUSE

4 March 2019

Internet sensation, Mason Ramsey, is coming to Waco Hall for a charity concert hosted by Phi Kappa Chi and Pi Beta Phi.

On March 28, Phi Kappa Chi and Pi Beta Phi will be hosting this concert to promote their philanthropies “I Love Orphans” and “Read Lead Achieve.”

Famous for his 2018 yodeling video in a Walmart, Mason Ramsey gained recognition online. Since then, Ramsey has gone on to perform on The Ellen Show, The Grand Ole Opry, and Coachella Music Festival.

“He’s really good at yodeling, and he’s super young, he’s only like eleven or twelve,” Anna Sanders Portland, Maine, freshman said. “I saw him on Instagram… and I was like “This kid’s really good.’”

Bradley, Phi Kappa Chi’s philanthropy chair, said he did not expect Ramsey’s agent to respond to his request so quickly. Bradley said he decided to reach out to Pi Beta Phi’s president at the time so that the two organizations could team up to fund the concert. The proceeds from the concert will be split to fund both philanthropies.

“Every penny we make will be donated to our respective philanthropies,” Trent Bradley, Colleyville senior said via email.

Pi Beta Phi member Lauren Glass says the money will help buy books for members to read to kids.

“As college students we don’t have a lot of money to just spend everywhere, but this money is going towards a really good cause,” Lauren Glass, Lufkin sophomore, said.

According to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation’s website, “One in four children will grow up functionally illiterate and for Pi Phi, that’s one child too many.”

Bradley said via email that the money raised by Phi Kappa Chi will go directly to I Love Orphans.

“The purpose of iloveorphans.com is to respond to the current crisis in Africa involving the enormous and overwhelming number of orphaned children in underdeveloped communities,” says the I Love Orphans website.

Both Bradley and Glass said this will be the first large-scale philanthropy event for both organizations. Bradley said he was surprised to book Ramsey as he has performed at Coachella and The Ellen Show. This concert is expected to draw a crowd for Mason Ramsey, so both Phi Kappa Chi and Pi Beta Phi say they expect good attendance to support their philanthropies.

“I can’t wait to see the entire Waco community come together and support an awesome cause. It’s gonna be a super fun night, but it’ll be cool knowing that thousands of lives will be changed halfway across the world as a result,” Bradley said via email.

The concert will be held at Waco hall and tickets are currently on sale for $10 each.

“Everyone at Baylor should go because it’s just a really fun thing to do on campus with your friends, and another way to make memories in college,” Glass said.
